    Photo Binge
The pleasure driving show was today! It was down at the horse park and I spent nearly all day there taking pictures.

No, these weren't just any pictures, this was my grand hurrah to use up as much film as possible before it all goes completely bad. This wasn't just 35mm either, though there was plenty of that used, to be sure. No, I broke out the Big One! The Mamiya got to use its rusty hears for the first time in a couple of years.

Egads, I don't think I can properly describe how much I've missed using that camera!

For those who are unfamiliar with the wonderful behemoth that is the Mamiya, it is a medium format camera that takes 2.5" film, about 4x5cm, I think. It is the old RB67 Pro S model and weighs more than five pounds without a lense attachred. I'm sure it weighs upwards of 10lbs whwn it has the big lens on it. Awesome, superb camera. Anyone who is serious about photography deserves the opportunity to shoot one of these.

Anyway, I shot five rolls of Mamiya film, which was all I had. I don't quite remember how many 35mm rolls I shot, but I do know that two of them are going to be rather sad. One roll say in the camera for two years and the other one I don't think it was loaded properly. That's okay, it was shoot it or loose it anyway and 35mm is a lot less expensive to develop than 120 film.

Next week I'm going to Mr. Grant's and getting the Mamiya film developed. It's been far too long since I paid him a visit.

Of course now that I've shot all the 120 film I now have an excuse to get some more, especially since the weather is cooler and I don't have to worry about the film melting on its way here.

The show was quite fun to watch. There was a Friesian and one Fjord and a bunch of Haflingers. There was also a Fell pony, which was pretty cool to see and entirely unexpected. I didn't think they even existed in Arizona, granted, it might be the only one. The lady said that she was oklabbing on setting up a breeding program here in AZ. Rather cool.

Once I get all of my film developed I'l have to scan it in and share some of the better images. O! Thee was this team there! They can't go without being mentioned! There was a team of black percherons and they were absolutely gorgeous and lovely and impeccably well-behaved! It was rather awesome watching that pair go. I took quite a few pictures of them and I'm seriously tempted to have a rather large print made of them once I get my film done and have it hung on the wall. You just don't see a nice team like that every day!

There was also a Haflinger team, but they're just not quite as impressive looking as a pair of black near 18hh Percherons.

Can't wait for the draft show in December! There should be quite a few good-looking teams and hitches there!

Thumbs are getting tired of typing on small phone keyboard so I'm signing off. Again apoplogies for weird typos.

LiveJournal Major Notes: Notes, Tweaks, Bug Kills, LJ_Cares!

    Notes augmented

We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!

    Product tweaks and bug kill

    1. In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
    2. If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
    3. The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
    4. If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
    5. If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
    6. Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)

New FCK fixes rich text editor!

    1. We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
    2. When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
    3. RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
    4. An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
    5. The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers

    LiveJournal Cares

We’re pleased to introduce you to [info]lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit [info]lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.

    Recommended Podcasts
I think I've mentioned a couple times before that of late, I listen to audio books more than music when I draw these days. Having a story told to you makes sitting still for 4-8 hours much less of a chore! As my budget for audio books is not huge, I've been taking advantage of some of the free podcasts to listen to as well. I thought I'd link a few of the ones I've enjoyed for anyone who's also looking for some listening material.

Writing Excuses - Brandon Sanderson (Fantasy author), Howard Tayler (Web comics), Dan Wells (Horror author)

I highly recommend writing excuses for anyone who's ever wanted to write their own novel or web comic. The podcasts are 15 minutes each and every week they cover a different subject. I found them very entertaining and they give you a lot to think about when writing. Coming from someone who produced 200 page failed web comic out of high school with no plan at all for what was going to happen more than 3 pages down the line, I can safely say that the importance of thinking your story through is something everyone who wants to do a comic (print or web) or novel (I think preplanning is a given there, haha) should consider. You can listen to seasons 1 and two through the archives, as there are too many episodes to have on itunes at once.

12 Byzantine Rulers - Lars Brownworth

A series of podcasts about the eastern roman empire. My friend Erich recommended these to me. The podcast covers the history of the Byzantine Empire by giving you the life stories of 12 key rulers. These probably won't be for everyone, as it is very much like having a (very good) history teacher lecture to you. But if you're in the mood for some learning, they're a good listen.

If anyone has any podcasts they favor and would like to recommend them, I'm all ears. I'm finished with Byzantine and halfway through season two of writing excuses and my stockpile is dwindling fast: Honoes! D=

    Q's
Hey you said you has no moneys! Grr! I know, but I have a month to save up for this. :P Besides, a little bit of warmth for a stranger who-knows-where is worth more than money anyhow. :)

I live in England/Austrailia/not America, can I still get a card? YES. :D

Can I sign up my friend as a surprise? Sure :)

How much does this cost to do? Honestly, I don't keep track that carefully, but I spent well over $100 on postage last time. And postage has gone up. :(

How many people are signed up to get a card? I don't get an exact count until I'm putting stamps on everything, I get a general count before I send my files to be printed then round up to account for last minute sign ups.

I'll send you a card back! Oouui! X3 Sure! However, since I will be moving I'm going to be sending all cards to my parents address so I'm one of those people that you can't mail no yiffy cards to >_>;; I got one of those last year X3333

I want to help sponsor, but I won't be able to send anything until... Hey, thanks for helping! If you want to help support the project, do it at your own pace and do not at all feel obligated, there is really no rush at all. I only have a deadline on the highest sponsor option since my extra surprise will take some extra time. :)

Did you get my email???? You didn't mail me back! I don't really have much to say so I won't email back unless I have a question or concern. "No news is good news!"

Uhm I think thats it. I'll update this journal as needed.

I might be making posts from my phone more often. Mostly because it doesn't tie up the phone line and I don't have to squeeze it in before Chris gets home (we have dial-up and can't both be on at once).

Of course the small keyboard is a little off-putting and my rate of typing is greatly hampered, but that's okay! I'm sure I'll manage!

Today was quite full. I had three lessons plus training and a garbage can (the ones you set out on the road, not the usual little daily sack) to fill with manure plus cleaning up after the training horses. I think I'm going to be sore tomorrow.

I'll attempt to sit down and do some descent telling of both today and yesterday as there was quite a bit of amusement associated with the ride yesterday.

For tomorrow: two lessons, work training horses, do some art, get degrees framed, mail paperwork for substitute teaching certificate. Oh, and some mucking. We mussn't forget that!

All good things and life moves forward!

    Network Maintenance: Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 04:00-06:00 UTC/GMT
EDIT@08:16 UTC/GMT. Wow. That was ugly. I expected it to go for 30 minutes and have maybe 1 minute of broken connectivity. Instead it lasted over 4 hours and we had 10 minutes of downtime directly related to the load balancer upgrades and then another 5-10 minutes of downtime when our primary Pingback database server crashed and the secondary couldn't take over; which could have been indirectly caused by the network upgrade missing a self-VIP.

Anyways, we're up, we're working, the load balancers are barely breaking a sweat right now and I need some food and a shot of whiskey. I don't even *like* whiskey!!

Thanks [info]mhwest and [info]dnewhall for helping out!

    ---

On Saturday the 14th at 4AM UTC/GMT we will be upgrading the operating system of our network load balancers to a newer version, one that will allow us to use both CPUs! Nifty, because multiprocessing is nice.

Since we have 2 load balancers, the plan is to upgrade 1 at a time, and there really should be very little impact to our website. Hopefully you won't notice a thing and I'll get to go back to the hotel and watch some wonderful late night infomercials.

We've got a lot of exciting projects coming up for 2010 and we're hoping that we'll be able to deliver them all to you, that you will find it useful/cool/lovely and then you will use the site even more. Behind-the-scenes work like this will give us the capacity to handle the anticipated traffic, so expect a few more maintenance windows especially in the beginning of next year as we've got some neat ideas to improve performance around here! We had the recent 30-45 minute outage yesterday due to one of our logging databases filling up disk space -- not so great design coupled with my human error in handling the initial problem -- and it looks like we're going to finally have some resources to eliminate stuff like that. I can't wait!

As usual, I will be updating status.livejournal.org before and after, just in case you are not able to reach our main website during the work.

Ugh, the past few days have been un-fun. I've started having nightmares, both with frightening imagery (Zombies) and emotional troubles (My family humiliating me, telling me that I don't belong with them, and trying to kill me.) Ugh...

I don't think it's because I've been watching ghost hunting shows, because I personally have no problem with those sorts of things. I also feel I know how to spiritually handle myself so that things won't come mess with me.

Admittedly, I haven't done any of that kind of thing recently, because I've been so busy moving. I guess Witches need downtime too! I really need to put up protections around the house.

I've been a little frustrated with life recently. I guess I feel like I'm spinning without direction. I hate that my room is taking SO LONG to put together, and I'm really...just not happy with the layout like I thought I was going to be. Maybe after it's put together I'll be happier with it, but, it's so awkward because there's a huge window and a giant closet where things SHOULD go. It literally eats up a wall and a half. The other half of a wall is eaten up my doorway to the bathroom and doorway out. So I get two half walls, and a full wall to actually DO anything with.

I may put my desk in front of the window halfway, and my entertainment center against the wall, with the bed facing these two things. That would place the kitchenette behind me... I don't know. I'll give this arrangement a month or so and then see how I feel about it.

I want to run away to Japan. That way I'd at least learn the language... ARGH I'm SO FRUSTRATED!

I miss my comfortable little room, where everything was happy, and I was able to ride my bike from the BART station, and my times weren't constrained to "Be sure you get home before 9 otherwise the bus stops running!" and "Last bus to SF leaves at 8AM!"

Maybe I'll just start taking my bike to work.

Oh! I just found a route I can take, only costs me $4.00, that I can get off with my bike and head out to the supermarket/borders/etc, and ride the rest of the way home! Nice!

I just want to say that book is f%$king terrifying. It's like a bizarre horror story with the lesson "Don't count on things staying the same because even the most reliable of things can eventually put you in a life threatening situation.

And I'm NOT talking about that piece of sh!t movie with the same title.

    Training
I think I failed to mention that a week ago Thursday my grandfather's horses arrived to start training with me. I've mostly done groundwork with them up to this point and they definitely need some work! The gelding (Moab) is terribly attached to Sahara (the mare) and is rather skittish overall. He will require a lot of desensitizing. Of course, he doesn't care about the saddle or the milk jug I tied to it banging about, but heaven forbid he be able to walk past the trailer, garbage can, or my car without thinking it's out to get him.

The mare is a bit more level-headed, but she hasn't had the work that she should have in her by now. She's a bit over-reactive on the ground and doesn't trust the line or the stick. I need to put the saddle on her this week and do more longeing work with her and get her more responsive to the aids on the ground before I get on her and start working her under saddle.

Both will require work, which was expected, though perhaps a little more than I initially thought. That's okay because any way it's good experience for me and Opa is getting some actual, real, descent training on his horses rather than having them sit somewhere and never actually being worked.

I think next week I'll see if I can pony them off of Kash or Panda in the arena and start taking them around the neighborhood with me.

I have other things to report, but I also have other things that I need to be doing!

    NaNoWriMo
As some of you know, November is National Novel Writing Month.  I remember a few months back thinking that I'd participate in that this year, because it would be really neat to have something published, even if that was just a handful of copies.  But alas, November arrived and I still wasn't sure what to write about - I had ideas in my head, but nothing solid enough to run with.

And now, or yesterday technically, the 8th of November, I have a solid idea for my novel, and I cranked out about 1,500 words over the course of about one and a half hours lastnight, but I'm too far behind schedule to try to participate in NaNoWriMo.  I think possibly I'll just hold off and wait till next year.  Besides, my novel cannot be finished within a month.

No, it's not because I don't have the drive to do it, it's because my novel is based on the campaign and characters in my Dungeons & Dragons group - I thought it would be a really cool idea to publish a novel based on the D&D adventure, and then give all the players copies of the novel.  I mean, seriously, how cool is that?

Reminder: Anthrocon 2010 DJ Auditions are Open! Deadline is January 1st!
Hey there DJs! Are you interested in some Stage Time at the Anthrocon 2010 dances? Prepare your audition mixes! Every year, Anthrocon provides many hours of dances, showcasing the talents of some of the best DJs the Furry Fandom has to offer. If you're interested in being a part of this magic, send us your audition mix (details below). All auditions must be received by January 1st! Selection will begin in January.

In order to DJ at Anthrocon, you must submit an audition mix. The best format is MP3, but almost anything will do. If you're not sure if your media is acceptable, e-mail the address below to find out. Most likely we'll be able to work with it.

Please be sure your mix is at least 30 minutes, and at most 90 minutes. When considering DJs, the following items play a part in selection.

    - Live mixing skill
    - Phrase and beatmatching
    - The use of mixing hardware
    - Song selection
    - Genre (Don't assume we won't play what you mix, take a chance! If it kicks ass I might book you even if we've never had that genre before)
    - Attitude
    - Experience

Please understand, no single one of these things will determine who gets to DJ and who doesn't. The selection process is a balancing act.

Send all questions and comments to: smblion at anthrocon dot org

A reminder, if you have DJed Anthrocon in recent years an audition mix is not needed, but you MUST e-mail me to notify me of your interest to return in 2010. If you do not e-mail me you will not be booked.
